Dear YES Prep Families,

We first want to welcome back our YES Prep Southwest Secondary students who returned to campus earlier this week. Students were greeted by specially trained emotional support dogs, dozens of counselors and by teachers and staff who had missed them. Students took part in activities designed to reflect and provide space for healing together. Our utmost priority is to do everything in our power to help students heal.

If you would like resources to help facilitate discussions with your family or if you’d like to connect with one of our counselors, please visit yesprep.org/southwest-strong.  We are here to help. We also want to thank all our YES Prep families and staff for all the support you have shown the Southwest Mavericks community. Thank you.

We have several updates, reminders and topics for you below, including school safety and security protocol, a recap of SAT School Day and YES Prep’s College Fair, information on applications for financial aid, support available for alumni and the upcoming lottery application launch for the 2022-2023 school year.

Standard Response Protocol for emergencies

As an important reminder, we are reinforcing all safety and security at Southwest and every other YES Prep campus. An important component is knowing the Standard Response Protocol that YES Prep uses in emergency response situations. We are asking families to please take a few minutes to familiarize yourselves with the terminology and actions that are taught and practiced at our schools. You may also want to review this with your child(ren). Standardizing these terms and actions will ensure that all our students are aware of what to do in an emergency at a YES Prep school.

Seniors participated in SAT School Day on Oct. 13

Schools across our district hosted SAT School Day for our seniors this past Wed., Oct. 13. Hosting SAT School Day at our YES Prep schools allows access to the SAT for all YES Prep students and ensures a familiar testing environment to help reduce test anxiety and encourage focus on test day. Students will all receive their scores for SAT School Day on Nov. 4, in time to include them in their college and financial aid applications.

The SAT is an assessment used by many colleges and universities to make college admission decisions. While you may have heard that some schools are going “test-optional,” it is important for our students to sit for the exam because SAT scores may be required by some of the schools on their college list, and SAT scores are still required for many scholarships.

YES Prep’s annual College Fair a success!

Yesterday, Oct.14, YES Prep hosted its annual College Fair. This year, because of the pandemic, we continued to offer our college fair virtually to allow students to interact with over 160 colleges and universities from across the United States. Through this event, juniors and seniors were able to explore diverse college options, figure out what “fit factors” they are looking for in a college, build their college list, get empowered with information and dramatically increase their college readiness.

Families, if you were not able to join online, we will have videos of all the panels available next week. We encourage you to go back and watch recordings of colleges your son or daughter are interested in along with them, to learn some about the colleges your son or daughter may apply to.

Applications for financial aid now open (FAFSA/TASFA/CSS Profile)

October marks the start of the financial aid application season. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) opened on Fri., Oct. 1. This year, the State of Texas will require all seniors in the class of 2022 to submit either the FAFSA or the TASFA to graduate. In addition, students applying to private colleges and universities may also be required to submit the CCS Profile.

All the applications for financial aid help colleges and universities determine students’ eligibility for loans, grants and scholarships. Seniors will have the opportunity to work with their college counselors on applying for financial aid during their seminar class; so be sure to have your 2020 tax return on hand as this will be one of the main documents needed to apply for federal student aid.

YES Prep alumni support

YES Prep’s Alumni Affairs Team has grown! It should come as no surprise that the pandemic has posed many challenges for our students; it too has presented many challenges for our alumni pursuing their post-secondary pathway. In response to these challenges, we now have a team of Alumni Transition Specialists and College Success Managers that will closely support them. Click here to learn more about these new positions and the Alumni Support team’s newest members.

Lottery application for the 2022-2023 school year launches in 2 weeks

Every Opportunity Starts with a YES! The 2022-2023 school year lottery application launches Fri., Oct. 29, and we invite you to continue the YES Prep legacy by applying for any other sibling in the family (who may now be entering elementary or sixth grade). Also, the highest compliment families can give our schools is the referral of friends or family. We need your help getting the word out!

If you know a family that may be interested in YES Prep, please send them our way. For more information on YES Prep enrollment, please visit yesprep.org/enroll

Before we close, we would like to spotlight Latinx Heritage Month, which ends today. If you haven’t done so already, we invite you to visit our blog to learn more about how we celebrated this month, as well as pictures of events and activities that took place at our schools. Plus, we have a list of scholarships specifically for our Latinx students and alumni. Make sure to read the book reviews four of our Latinx students did on books written by Latinx authors.

Reminder, there is no school for students and staff this Mon., Oct. 18, for the fall holiday.

As always, thank you for your time and attention. Our next Family Update will be on Fri., Oct. 29.

Thank you.

Gracias.
